I'm not understanding all the negativity that is surrounding the new points system ([link]. They are not another statistic, they are not a show of popularity, and they aren't even public to the rest of deviantART. It's exactly the same as deviantDOLLARS, except that you can exchange them.
You don't get points for favoriting, or commenting, or receiving any form of message or pageview. You could get them from winning a contest as a prize, for your birthday, for a holiday, or just because someone loves you over dA.
The points system benefits each deviant because it offers another method to receive dA merchandise (and even for free if you receive points as present, sort of like a dA gift card). It also creates a new method for dA to generate more revenue. DeviantART is a business, and it needs a revenue/profit to survive. This points system will hopefully increase revenue, and we as the deviantART community will indirectly benefit from it by continually receiving cool new updates and a place to showcase and view art.
So stop hating
Matt

I agree with you! I think it's going to help various dA users as well as groups a lot. Subscriptions, even though they aren't that expensive, they're something a lot of people want or think they need. However, not everyone is willing to give out free subs to random people just because the receivers think they deserve one.
I hope that with this new points system, even if people don't buy or win a sub, they can perhaps earn one of their own via this points system and maybe build up friendships in the process.
Mind you, that's a little idealistic.
