It's Winter! + New Year's Resolution

Wed Dec 12, 2012, 9:06 PM

Hi all!

I just returned home for winter break from college today and am very much looking forward to relaxing for the next several weeks. This has been a stressful quarter, but I must say that I absolutely love college and that I love Chicago.

I was unable to bring my camera gear back with me on the plane, so unfortunately I won't be able to get back into photography over the break. HOWEVER, I am making it my New Year's Resolution to do more photograph. It is unacceptable that my last "photoshoot" was in April of this year.

How is everyone doing? I haven't spoken with so many in you for so long. I miss you all.

Photos on my mind:

Happy holidays,

University!!

Mon Apr 2, 2012, 12:38 AM

Hello all,

It has been forever since my last update. I have been incredibly busy with my last year of high school, but things are starting to quiet down and I will be officially graduated come June 13th. In fact, last Thursday I enrolled in The University of Chicago, my dream school of the past three years. I was also wait-listed at Harvard and could potentially hear back from them anytime between May and August (though I am not expecting much). I plan on being an economics major.

I am very eager to leave the west coast and explore this new chapter of my life (cheesy, cheesy I know...). There is no doubt that dA played a significant role in developing my photography which in turn no doubt played a large role in helping me stand out as an applicant. Thank you to all! I say this every summer, but I plan on being more active with my photography. I am infatuated with the architecture at UChicago so expect those shots sometime in the near future!

Goodbye dA for 9 Months

Mon Sep 6, 2010, 1:25 AM

Or at least partly. :P

Today marks the last day of summer. The last day of freedom, of fun (although I spent the first two and a half months of it interning, which was a great experience). Sadly, I took very little pictures. I think I had about two photo outings at a maximum and submitted about three images(I'm afraid my creative juices have been running dry for the past two years or so).

Anyways, back to the school part. I'll have a very rigorous course this year (full IB) and that coupled with other various extracurriculars will leave very little time for dA and even littler time for photography. I'll still drift in from time to time, probably daily, mostly using dA as a mechanism for procrastination (:cough:) but I'm not sure how much time I'll actively be on it and how many pieces of art I will actually submit.

We'll see... Anyways, I though I'd drop in and leave this little note because I haven't really changed my journal for several months and have been lurking more in the forums and less on my profile page (I'm rambling now).

I guess I'll talk to you guys later.

Young Garden Photographer of the Year

Tue Apr 27, 2010, 7:07 PM

Hello all!

I just received very exciting news. I was judged Young Garden Photographer of the Year in the [link] :) I won with my "Snowfall in Eden", which is probably one of my favorites of mine. I will have the photo on display at the Kew Gardens, Lacock Abbey, and Wakehurst Place in London! I will also be receiving a quality photo printer, which should be great! I would no longer always have to go through my printer.
Thanks everyone! Without dA and you guys I would never have gotten into photography :)

Llamas!

Fri Apr 2, 2010, 8:18 PM

This llama rage is amazing  Very fun too!
My ultimate goal is to get an albino llama, and I am 1/4 of the way there!
There's also this cool new llama whoring chat #GiveALlamaGetALlama  Basically, it's a bunch on people willing to do llama exchanges! A great way to meet new people, see new art, and of course, accumulate llamas.
Whoring favourites, pageviews, watches, and comments are not okay in my book, but whoring llamas is totally acceptable in my opinion :slow:

Help me get to 1000 llamas! If you comment and give a llama, you can be sure that you will receive one back :) Perhaps I'll throw in a prize in the future :plotting:

And here is a thanks for my dA friends for helping me out with the llama trade venture:

New York! - Recommendations?

Mon Mar 15, 2010, 3:43 PM

I have next week off for spring break, and my mom and I decided that we'd head over to New York to spend some time in the Big Apple! It will be my first time there, and I am very excited. I'll be staying right near Times Square and Central park, so I'm hoping there'll be many things within walking distance.

I need some recommendations on where to go, what to see, etc. I'll be carrying my camera, but will mostly be a tourist the whole time. I'll probably leave my tripod at home, and bring a couple of lenses or so.

I'm not understanding all the negativity that is surrounding the new points system ([link]. They are not another statistic, they are not a show of popularity, and they aren't even public to the rest of deviantART. It's exactly the same as deviantDOLLARS, except that you can exchange them.

You don't get points for favoriting, or commenting, or receiving any form of message or pageview. You could get them from winning a contest as a prize, for your birthday, for a holiday, or just because someone loves you over dA.

The points system benefits each deviant because it offers another method to receive dA merchandise (and even for free if you receive points as present, sort of like a dA gift card). It also creates a new method for dA to generate more revenue. DeviantART is a business, and it needs a revenue/profit to survive. This points system will hopefully increase revenue, and we as the deviantART community will indirectly benefit from it by continually receiving cool new updates and a place to showcase and view art.

So stop hating :shakefish:

Thanks guys!

Thanks all for voting in my poll and writing such great comments. They were very helpful for my final! I probably won't end up answering all of them, as I still have to answer messages from back in September :faint: But, I'm just letting you guys know that I really appreciate them.

Scholastic Award + Message Centre

Sun Jan 3, 2010, 1:12 AM

 Scholastic Award

Hello all! I'd just thought I'd update you. Just recently I've received a Gold Key award for several of my photographs (Medley, Smith Rock Gorge, and Tangled Surf) in the Scholastic Writing and Art Competition. This means that these pieces will be mounted in a gallery at the Pacific Northwest College of Arts and that these pieces will be moving on to the national round. I couldn't be more excited!

 Message Centre

Secondly, I am still far behind in messages. I only answered about a dozen or so messages since my last journal (pretty evident as I still haven't answered the comments of that journal). I'm thinking of nuking the whole message center, but I feel so guilty ignoring the questions that I've been asked within those comments. I'm thinking about just handpicking the more insightful comments and just answering those. Happy New Years!

Anyways, I'll talk to you guys later :salute:

Taking a break...

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 23, 2009, 5:47 PM

01.-

Hello all. School has been very busy lately, and on top of school work, I'm scheduled everyday after school for a different activity (MUN, Key Club, Math Club, Science Olympiad/Science Bowl, Speech and Debate). I'm also the publicist (hopefully soon-to-be VP =p) of our Junior State of America chapter, an officer (leader) in French Club, and a captain/officer/leader of our Quidditch Team. Okay, I now realize how unbelievably nerdy all this sounds.

The point of that was to show how little time I have for photography. Not only this, but I also am going through a huge creativity dry spell. I no longer feel the same passion for the art as I did a year or more ago. I'm no longer as inspired by the photography of others, either. I'm hoping that this is a common element in every photographer's life, especially seeing all the other artists talk about their blocks in their journals.

I'll be taking a break from photography at least until the winter break. I'll probably get out soon and try to catch some of the Autumn color before it is gone. Other than that, I don't really see the art in my near future. I'll try to keep updated with dA, but with 2,000 messages and growing, I'm becoming more and more lazy :P If you need something from me, though I doubt it, you can shoot me a note :)

I'm Back!

Journal Entry: Sat Sep 12, 2009, 12:57 PM

01.- Hello All

Okay, I was grounded for a week (thanks to ~seekingmarch =p), but I'm back now. I have over a 1,000 messages so I will try to answer them as soon as possible, but will probably take several days. I want to thank you all for the support you've left on Medley :) It was a fun project. Since I love the garden and that particular tree so much, it's a bit sad being finished with the pictures. However, I was brainstorming and found some new creative ways to incorporate the tree in more shots, primarily based on weather. Hopefully we will receive some of the forecasts that I am wishing for, but at least it's the season for it :)

Final Calibration

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 16, 2009, 5:16 PM

01.- Finally

After visiting a printer after a commission, I was able to verify whether my calibration is correct. Seeing how my photographs looked on his screen, I came to the conclusion that I've been editing my photographs on a screen with too low contrast. This means that, under the right calibration, all of my photographs look over saturated and have too much contrast. My Cintiq seems to be the only monitor well calibrated, so I will be spending some time re-edited the majority of my photographs in order to fix them up. I'm glad this calibration mystery is finally resolved :phew:

Gallery Overhaul

Mon Aug 3, 2009, 1:54 PM

Okay, maybe not quite an overhaul, but I just stored around thirty older/low quality deviations from my gallery. I was getting a bit sick of them, and decided to up the quality of my account! I still have pictures waiting :faint: I'll work on solving the calibration problem today.

Calibration Issues

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 26, 2009, 8:24 PM
I haven't been submitting much lately, actually almost nothing at all. I have photos waiting to be submitted, though my screen calibrations (on all four monitors) are very different. I have a Spyder calibration device, though it has been a bit of a pain to use (the software is really glitchy on my computers).
The Wacom screen doesn't seem to calibrate well/at all, my PC is running Vista and therefore doesn't hold ICC profiles well, and my two desktops upstairs are the only ones that may be correct :faint: Just hold out on me! I still have several shots from Smith Rock I am planning to submit and a Portland cityscape or two. I might be heading over to my printer to see how my images look on his screen (assuming that it is correctly calibrated over there).

Very frustrating!

Portfolio

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 6, 2009, 7:47 PM
Hey guys! Back from Central Oregon. I have more photos to submit, and they should be up within the next week. I experimented a bit with black and white and will have to see if I'd like to submit some. Anyways, here is my portfolio: gallery. I used my own domain name because, hell, I'm too lazy to work with flash to design my own and I found the dA portfolio adequate for what I need. Share yours! I want to see them :D

Edit: Please vote for my entry into a small college scholarship competition here: [link] :) I'll really appreciate it, only two clicks!

Summer + Trip

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 22, 2009, 8:22 PM
So it's summertime :eager: Nothing much is going on, except I am planning a three-five day photography road trip down Eastern Oregon. We'll be stopping at some of Eastern Oregon's most beautiful spots: Smith Rock, Painted Hills, Crater Lake, maybe Alvord Desert, etc. Any other suggestions? I'll also be heading down to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe sometime next month. Europe may also be an option this summer.
I haven't been too active lately, primarily because of my laziness, but also due to difficulties with calibrating my monitors. My Spyder is acting funky and we're trying to get everything to match up on my PC, desktop, and Cintiq. Once that happens, I'll feel more comfortable about submitting pictures that I have lined up :excited:!

 Also check out these winners of ~jayshree's Scape Contest

Seniority!

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 27, 2009, 10:12 PM
Today I was awarded seniorship :faint: I want to thank all of my supporters so much  What may be a tick, means quite a bit to me :) I really love this community and everything that it has offered me. It has given me a chance to develop my art and meet some truly great people while doing so. DeviantART has really changed my life. I would have never stuck with photography if it weren't for you guys. Now, it is a way for me to blow stress, express myself, and earn some extra cash for college ;)This is my second home. Again, I would like to thank all of you for the support. Especially to `FaMz and `KathrynODriscoll who seemed to have suggested me   :cuddle: And to $fourteenthstar for choosing to award it  Hope to see you guys around soon
